   TEXT SETTING

Click Type Tool (T). For easier access, open the character palette.

imagebam.com

Set the Font Family, Font Style, Size, Anti-aliasing, Text Alignment, Color.

Font Family will depend on the conversation type in the script.

  • Normal conversation -> Wild Words
  • Description of protagonis thoughts -> Felt or Artbrush or SF Cartoonist Hand or Komika Text
  • People’s talking in the past -> Wild Words
  • Random descriptions (like an explanation of a certain scene) -> Benquit Frisky or BrushArt or Splash or SF Cartoonist Hand or Komika Text
  • Narration -> Vassallo or Merced or Splash or ArtBrush or HansHand or HansHand or SF Cartoonist Hand or Bottix or Komika Text
  • Additional dialogue that’s either outside the bubbles or written in handwritten style -> KristenITC or Chinacat or Hooteroll or Twenty or Willow or Gemelli or Augie or Valley or Angelina or Andrew script font
  • Translator’s note -> Benquit Frisky or BrushArt or Splash
  • SFX/sound effect -> Use the most suitable and resemble the effect. Such as Twelve ton goldfish, Umberto, Mouth Breather, 21 Kilobyte Salute, Borneo, Candy Sniper, Radioactive Granny, Toontime, Vademecum, Waved Line, Valley, Annifont, Lousy, Belizarus, Big Fish ensemble, Kindergarten, Maple serum, Screwball, Swingset, Teenage angst, Tricktag, Whimsico, Wiffles, Willow, A Little Pot, Beach Type, Foxjump, Garage Shock, Kids, Mareen’s Print, School Bully, Space up Your Life …etc.
  • Font style is mostly Roman/Regular.

Size will depend on the bubble. But I like using either 3 pt or 3.15 pt or 3.3 pt font size for Wild Words. Other font size is depend.

    Anti-aliasing, set to smooth.

    Text-alignment is mostly center text.

Color is mostly Black-#000000 and Gray-#666666 (for thoughts and people’s talking in the past).

Now we’ll start inserting the text.

Open your Text Tool (T) and character palette.

Set all the requirement setting like I explained above.

Make a box (by click, hold the mouse, drag down and release).

Copy the text from the script and paste it into the box.

The setting I used and the place where I put the text:

    imagebam.com

Please put the text nicely, center, balance, and not too long (either horizontally or vertically).

    Some bad examples:

    imagebam.com –> too horizontally long.

    imagebam.com –> not center.

    imagebam.com –> not balance.

    Good example:

    imagebam.com

    This is text-setting for thought:

    imagebam.com

Since the text located in a background pattern, please set the Blending options to Stroke, either 2px or 3px, White. (I prefer to use 2px except for specific places).

Right-click the layer and choose Blending Options.

The setting and result are like this:

    imagebam.com

Now the last one is SFX.

The setting and result are like this:

    imagebam.com

Feel free to use warped text setting. I use this kind of setting:

    imagebam.com

Then I will set the Blending Options to Stroke, 3px, White.

    Note and tips:

  • I usually do the cleaning steps to all of images in the file. And after cleaning process completed, I will start text-setting steps to all the images.
  • Everytime I do text-setting, I will copy/paste all the texts in the script to the image. After that, I’ll rearrange the text placement and change the font family, size and color, etc.
  • I will set opacity to 70% in Layer 1 (that resulted from removing image in cleaning steps). That way, I can see where I suppose to place the text based on the original image. After that, don’t forget to change back the opacity to 100%.
  • I recorded some small steps into actions. Such as grayscale, clear, leveling, image resizing, text-set Wild words 3pt black, change black text to gray, …etc. My recorded actions for cleaning: here and for text-setting: here. The setting is for my Photoshop so it may be not work for your photoshop.
